Getting Accepted

Students reading and walking

Admittance to Texas State University is based primarily on the applicants’ overall academic record, and to a lesser extent, their involvement outside the classroom. Admission requirements for freshman candidates are outlined below.

High school students who will be attending Texas State the semester following their graduation (not including summer sessions) will be evaluated as freshman applicants regardless of the number of dual credit or transferable college credits earned in high school. These students need to fill out the freshman admissions application.

State of Texas Uniform Admissions Standards

Per state law, TEC 51.803-51.809, Uniform Admissions Standards (UAS) require all students meet one of the following college readiness standards in order to be eligible for consideration for admission at a Texas Four-Year Public Institution.

  • Successfully complete the Recommended or Advanced (Distinguished) High School Program or complete the portion of the program that was available to them; or
  • Successfully complete a curriculum that is equivalent* in content and rigor to the recommended or advanced (distinguished) high school program at a high school that is exempt from offering such programs; or
  • Satisfy the College Readiness Benchmarks on the SAT or ACT assessment:

SAT- 1500 out of 2400 (Verbal + Math + Writing)
ACT- 18 English, 21 Reading, 22 Mathematics and 24 Science

*Equivalencies must be documented by the students' high school using one of the Texas Private High School Certification forms below.

Students who graduated in 2011 or after from Texas private schools, Texas public schools and out-of-state schools use this form.

UAS

Students who graduated in 2010 or before from Texas private schools, Texas public schools and out-of-state schools use UAP 2010.

Automatic Admission for Freshmen

The grid below reflects Texas State's admission standards for freshman applicants. Candidates must demonstrate eligibility by means of high school rank in class, ACT or SAT scores, the admission essay, and extra-curricular involvement. Applicants who meet the standards below and send all materials in by the assigned deadline are automatically admitted.

PAS Review

Freshmen who rank in the top three quartiles of their class and whose high school rank and test scores place them near the assured admission requirement, may be eligible for an individual Predicted Academic Success (PAS) review. A limited number of students whose academic record demonstrates potential for academic success at Texas State University-San Marcos will be offered admission. For more details about the PAS review, visit the PAS review Web site.

Non-Ranking Schools

If you attend a school that does not provide a class rank, make sure you visit our Non-Ranking Schools Web site.

Dual Credit Students

Students with fewer than 30 transferable hours will be considered for admission on the basis of their high school academic record and test scores, and must have a 2.0 GPA in all transferable college course work attempted. Students must also be eligible to return (e.g., free of suspension, dismissal, or forced withdrawal) to all previous institutions regardless of GPA or degrees received.
