Transfer Credit Self-Evaluation

Purpose

Transfer students typically have a lot of questions about what credits transfer to Texas State and how credits will transfer toward their degree plan.  This page is designed to assist you through the steps of the transfer process.

Please keep in mind Texas State's Transfer Admissions Requirements:

  • Minimum 2.25 GPA in all transferable courses
  • Minimum of 30 transferable credit hours from an accredited institution
  • Eligibility to return to all previous colleges and universities (free of suspension, dismissal or enforced withdraw)

The Core Curriculum

As a student currently attending another college and looking to transfer to Texas State in the most efficient way possible, your top priority should be taking core classes. Regardless of your major, you will have to complete the core curriculum courses in order to graduate.  Whether you have already completed quite a few credit hours or you are just starting your college career, you are encouraged to track the status of your core curriculum.  You do not need to be core complete to transfer to Texas State.  Click the PDF document below to view Texas State's Core Curriculum:

Texas State Core Curriculum Guide

For an explanation of the Core Curriculum structure, see the below image:

Note:  Sometimes, the TCCN equivalent is not the same as the equivalent course number listed at your college.  You can use the CatsWeb database mentioned below to double check each equivalency.

Additional Classes Taken

Some students may wish to complete an additional course or two from their Texas State degree program before transferring.  If you plan to do this, you will first need to find your degree program using the Undergraduate Catalog, which can be found at this link:

Undergraduate Catalog

Your degree program will likely show your classes listed according to each academic year or semester of a typical four-year college career.  Most degree plans include the Core Curriculum courses, so you can ignore those courses if your Core is complete.  The courses are listed in Texas State codes and numbers.  To find which courses are offered at your current college and their equivalencies, use our CatsWeb database at this link:

CatsWeb Equivalencies

Click the links for the schools you previously attended, then search the four letter course subject code to see all of the courses listed in that subject with their Texas State equivalencies.  You will be able to find equivalencies for all of the classes you have previously taken at any Texas college.  Now you know how all of your credits transfer!

Transfer Process

Once you have completed all of your core classes as well as any prerequisite classes for your degree, it's time to transfer.  Follow the transfer admissions process at this link:

Transfer Admissions Process

Upon completion of your application, expect that it will take three to four weeks to process and evaluate your transcripts.  When an admissions decision has been made, we will send you a letter detailing our decision, as well as an official evaluation of all of your previous college work and a calculation of your overall transfer GPA.  Here is a brief explanation of abbreviations you may see:

• Non-Transferable – No credit for admission purposes
• VOCED – Vocational Education - No credit for admission purposes
• ACT – Physical Fitness and Wellness (One-credit KINE at most junior colleges)
• ELNA – Elective Not Advanced (transferable lower-level course with no equivalent offered at Texas State, counts toward GPA calculation)
• ELADV – Elective Advanced (transferable upper-level course with no equivalent offered at Texas State, counts toward GPA calculation)

Reminders:

-Texas State will transfer as many of your courses/hours that are considered transferable; however, only 66 lower-level hours will be applied toward your degree plan. Additional upper-level hours from a four-year university may also be applied.  You will need to take a minimum number of credit hours at Texas State in order to graduate with a Texas State degree.

-Repeat Policy - You may repeat a course one time to replace the first grade earned in that class, regardless of what that grade is.  Make sure that the repeat course you take is exactly the same as the initial course, or equivalent to the initial course if the repeat is taken at a different college than the first attempt.  Use Catsweb to confirm equivalencies.

-Grades of "D" and "F" are transferable.  If the course is considered a transferable course, then the grade you earned in it is transferable.  A minimum grade of "D" is required in Core Curriculum courses to satisfy Core requirements.

-At least 25% of upper-division courses must be completed in-residence at Texas State.
