At Texas State, we are excited to welcome nearly 12,000 new Bobcats each year at New Student Orientation (NSO)!

Important Notice

We encourage you to sign up early to attend New Student Orientation (NSO) to get a feel for life as a Bobcat. If your plans change and you decide TXST isn't your path, you may request a full refund of orientation fees paid by sending an email to nso@txstate.edu in advance of participating in NSO and before June 1.

What To Expect

On-Campus Freshmen NSO Experience

Summer New Student Orientation (NSO) for freshmen is a one-day, on-campus program and Fall NSO is a two-day, on-campus session. Both are designed to prepare incoming first-year students to be successful at Texas State. In order to satisfy your orientation requirement, it is important for you to sign up and attend this NSO session. To sign up for NSO, students must be admitted to the university and have an activated NetID and password.

Academic Advising and Course Registration

After signing up for NSO, you will be provided information about advising and registration. Advising and registration for your first semester courses will occur separately from the on-campus NSO experience.

As a part of the advising and registration process, you will:

  • Officially declare your major
  • Report any college credit you have completed (AP, IB, dual credit, etc.)

Our First-Year Advisors will review your submissions and identify courses that align with your major and career goals. Once they've selected your courses, they will enroll you in a full-time semester schedule.

NSO Sign-up

Freshman Orientation sessions are for first-time students who 1) are graduating from high school and will start at Texas State the semester after graduation, or 2) have graduated from high school and have not taken any college level courses since graduating.

    The one-day, on-campus orientation session is required for all new first-year students starting in the summer term.

    Freshman NSO Fee = $110

    Freshmen signing up for NSO for Summer 2024 will pay a $110 fee at sign-up.* 
    A full refund of paid fees may be requested by email in advance of participating in NSO and before June 1.
    *The $110 fee will be deferred to the semester bill for students who qualify for an application fee waiver and it may be covered, in full or in part, by financial aid.
