How to Apply

Are you a transfer applicant?

You are a transfer applicant if you have:

  • Earned transferable credit hours from a college or university, and
  • Been out of high school for at least one semester (not including summer). 

We look at the number of transferable credit hours that have been completed at the time of application.

Not a transfer? Apply as a freshman.

To complete your application, make sure you follow each of the steps below. It is important that you submit required documents before the deadline for full consideration. After an initial review, some applicants may be asked to submit additional information.

Step 1

Submit an online application

Complete and submit the transfer application on ApplyTexas or Common App. It is important to fill out all parts of the application completely (essay not required).

Step 2

Pay the application fee

Pay the nonrefundable $75 application fee. Fee waivers are available to students who qualify based on need.

Step 3

Have your official college transcript(s) sent

Texas State requires official transcripts from every college and university you have attended. Submit your transcript(s) by contacting your previous institutions and requesting an official copy to be sent directly to Texas State electronically via Parchment, Naviance, or National Student Clearinghouse. Unofficial copies will not be accepted.

Step 4

Submit your high school transcript or GED certificate with scores (if applicable)

A high school transcript is required for students applying with 14 or fewer transferable college credits completed, and may also be required to satisfy the foreign language requirement. If applicable, submit your transcript or GED certificate using the document uploader.

Choosing Courses

If you are looking to transfer to Texas State, your main focus should be taking core classes, as they are more likely to transfer directly and will need to be completed regardless of your major. If you would like to take additional courses, use the Undergraduate Catalog to find your intended degree plan.

Transferring Courses

As a transfer student, you are typically most concerned about which credits will transfer to Texas State and how they will be counted toward your degree plan. Our guide to Transfer Credit Evaluations will help you find credit equivalencies for commonly transferred courses. To learn how to transfer course work to the Honors College, visit their webpage.

Only 66 lower-level credit hours may be applied to your degree plan. Upper-level credit hours may also be applied from a four-year university, however, at least 25 percent of your upper-level courses must be completed at Texas State.

Also, be aware that your transfer hours may affect your ability to receive financial aid in the future. Visit the Financial Aid and Scholarships webpage on Satisfactory Academic Progress for more information.

 

Repeating Courses

You may repeat a course one time to replace the first grade earned in that class, regardless of what that grade is. Make sure that the repeat course you take is exactly the same as the initial course, or equivalent to the initial course if the repeat is taken at a different college than the first attempt. If the course is considered a transferable course, then the grade you earned in it is transferable. A minimum grade of D is required in Core Curriculum courses to satisfy core requirements.

 

Veteran Admissions & Military Credit

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions welcomes military veterans who are interested in enrolling at Texas State. All applicants must meet our freshman or transfer admission standards to be admitted.

If you have military transcripts, please submit them to our office for evaluation. We work with academic colleges to determine how courses are evaluated. Please be aware that military credit and performance will not be used for admission purposes.
